Kubištová, Mariana ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Schlosser Trnková, Petra (referee) ; Pospěch, Tomáš (referee)
Mariana Kubištová CZECH ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE 1920s TO THE 1950s Abstract The thesis Czech Architectural Photography in the 1920s to the 1950s presents the theme of architecture photography, from the 1920's to the 1950's, focusing on Czech cultural setting, observing photography meeting contemporary acts in the field of architecture, thus the photography of modern architecture. It methodologically researches the theme from a visual study viewpoint; however it applies a little more traditional approaches, which try to define architecture photography depending on functions it carries out; to demarcate its various categories, describe its history and name some of its important representatives. Each of these approaches is able to capture a different aspect of the observed theme. The first part of the thesis attempts to answer what architecture photography is, what we can qualify as architecture photography and how we can approach and interpret it. It summarizes research and knowledge of this field up till now, not just within Czech cultural setting but also abroad. Last but not least, it tries to outline historical, social and artistic context of the researched era. The second part counts with the presumption that the core and the biggest volume of visual material lies in the field of professional...
“Philosopher of Structures” Forgetting, Archive and Rediscovering of Jaroslav Josef Polívka
Jackson, Ladislav ; Jakubec,, Ondřej (referee) ; Šlapeta, Vladimír (referee) ; Zálešák, Jan (advisor)
The main output of the thesis is the exhibition Philosopher of Structures: Architect and Engineer Jaroslav J. Polívka (18861960), which was realized in 2021 at the Faculty of Fine Arts Gallery in Brno and in 2022 at the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery in Prague. The textual part of the work, that accompanies the exhibition, presents the extensive work of Jaroslav Josef Polívka, placing it in the context of the development of global modern architecture and in relation to the working conditions of architects and engineers in the first half of the twentieth century. Following on from the main areas of the exhibition, it elaborates the themes of the places and locations in which Jaroslav Polívka worked and for which he designed, the social networks in which he integrated himself in and of which he was an actor, and the archive, the structure of which played a significant role in his forgetting and rediscovery. The aim of the work is not to manipulate Polívka into the role of a “great architect”, but to present him as a co-creator of a solid building culture in the Czech lands, abroad in Europe and in North America, to show the diversity of building types in which he was able to find opportunities for technical and structural innovations, which he wanted to contribute to the improvement of modern life. The aim of the work is to rehabilitate the structural engineer and architect, to detach the narration of his legacy from other authorities, as it has been a custom in domestic and American historiography (representatives of the Czechoslovak avant-garde, Frank Lloyd Wright) and to indicate a number of non-artistic and non-architectural circumstances that shaped the form of his works.

Mladičová, Iva ; Wittlich, Petr (advisor) ; Klimešová, Marie (referee) ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (referee)
1 Abstract A monograph on Jan Kotík (1916-2002) introduces both his art and theoretical work, it deals with a historical and cultural context of the now-defunct Czechoslovakia. Kotík's - an artist's, theoretician's, published author's, educator's - artwork enjoys a prominent position in the context of Czech art of the second half of 20th century. An art-historical assessment of artwork was based on Kotik's artwork inventory and on all the documentation on Kotik's life and art work archived in the Documentation Department of the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the CR and in private archives in the CR and Berlin. The study is based on a method of organic combination of biographical data and art-historical data with quotation of Kotik's theoretical texts. An evolution of artist's work is demonstrated chronologically with the context to Czech and world art. The monograph includes chapters: "Father Pravoslav's Art Studio and Study Years", "Art Group 42", "Possibilities of Applied Art", "Painting-Object", "Stay in Berlin", "Returns".
The end of The Carnival - Poetism on the verge of the 1930s
Bílková, Petra ; Wiendl, Jan (advisor) ; Vojvodík, Josef (referee)
Univerzita Karlova v Praze Filozofická fakulta Ústav české literatury a literární vědy Diplomová práce Petra Bílková KONEC KARNEVALU poetismus na přelomu 20. a 30. let THE END OF THE CARNIVAL Poetism on the verge of the 1930s Praha 2012 Vedoucí práce: doc. PhDr. Jan Wiendl, Ph.D. Abstract In the first half of the 1920's, in the Czech avant-garde, a new art began to form - Poetism. On the basis of individual manifests and programmatic articles it was defined as modus vivendi. In the 1920's many principles and ideas were shaping the future, not only for the society, but also for the artistic movements. Poetism featured mainly an original concept of art and life; the authors of theoretical articles were mainly Karel Teige and Vítězslav Nezval. Within a few years the concept of life as a careless game and a source of joy faded and bitter- sweet topics began to penetrate Poetism. At this time, the poetics of Poetism changed from the original cheerfulness and everyday beauty to serious existential topics - the evidence is provided by many works of art. This transformation affected poetry the most. In poems made by authors, who came out of Poetism, inspiration thereby gathered is still evident; however, more serious issues are coming to the fore. Each of those poems expresses a distinct reconciliation with the...
From Scribe to Ministerial Counsellor: The Involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the Cinematography of the Forties and Fifties
Kupková, Marika ; Klimeš, Ivan (advisor) ; Skopal, P. (referee) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee)
1 Abstract The thesis focuses on the involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the management of the Film Department of the Ministry of Information during the years 1945 - 1948. His ministe- rial engagement is related to the contemporary strengthening of the importance of literary preparation of the film and to the associated state dramaturgical supervision. Jiří Mařánek belongs to the circle of writers connected on one hand through their affiliation with the interwar avant-garde movements, on the other hand by their postwar involve- ment in the power apparatus that ended by the political and economic changes in the late forties and fifties. His professional fate speaks about the changes of cultural policy of the state, about the institutional development of the cinema and about the relations between literary and cinematic arts. It is a testimonial of what a successful professional career meant for a man of letters and what relationship it had to the cinema. We follow therefore a relatively brief but breakthrough episode of a writer and retired officer in the position of the Ministerial Counsellor, and we try to place its course and causes into a complex network of historical and social contexts and personal motivation. Focusing on this personality unburdened neither by a historical uniqueness, fundamental role of...
Luis Cernuda - The Melancholic Poet Tossed beetwen the Reality and the Desire.

The work of Antonin Tenzer involves his activities in the period of six decades in the turbulent era of development of Czechoslovak history of architecture. The architect is known as one of the representatives of the avant-garde and High functionalism, author of Faculty Hospital in Prague-Motol and other medical buildings or the Jalta hotel, a building associated with socialist realism. In my dissertation, I tried to map the main typological fields that Antonín Tenzer used in his work. My goal was to widen the portfolio of famous buildings, and on the basis I defined the architect's major themes and current issues, which were responded in his effort. I based primarily on historic materials - published projects, plan documentation and writings of public and private archives, as well as personal heritage, made available to me by the architect's family. In particular thematic areas I focused on Tenzer's vital and successful implementation of competition projects, which he later followed and extended. In addition to impulses from his collaborators, debates and majors works of those days I was looking for elements and methods of Tenzer that influenced the architecture environment. I observed the influence of historical events and the socio-political situation in his work, for example, housing issues in...
